When I meet clients to discuss their business ideas or projects, I always start the conversation with questions that lead me to find out why they’re doing it. Why are they putting all of their time, energy and focus into chasing their dreams? It seems like a simple enough question, but quite often, people have a difficult time answering. Let me rephrase that, quite often people have a difficult time answering truthfully.

You see, it’s easy to make decisions in different areas of our life for all of the wrong reasons. We choose schools and educational paths that mom and dad think are best. We dive into a career because of the social status we’ll attain by walking in those shoes. We launch businesses ventures because we’re told there’s an excellent opportunity to make income and live the life of our dreams. But in the end, are any of those decisions making us truly happy? Maybe. However, in my experience and through many conversations, I’m learning most of the time it’s not.

If we’re making decisions for the wrong reasons, a few things happen. We begin resenting those who led us in that direction. We start hating our day to day routine because it doesn’t fulfill our basic needs. Suddenly, being driven by money is no longer enough to keep us going. And then what? We’re miserable. I know. I know because I’ve done it.

When I sit down with an eager hustler, the conversation of the ‘why’ is always an eye-opener. I immediately know if we’re going to be a good fit because I am certain that the drive must be for more than money, social status or making mom and pops happy to reach success. There must be love and excitement for the work that needs to get done. (And boy is there work to be done when we’re chasing our dreams.) Otherwise, the spark fizzles. There’s money wasted. Spirits are broken.

If you’re currently exploring a new career path, deciding on where you would like to focus your studies or venturing off into the world of entrepreneurship, take a moment to ask yourself- Why? If the answer doesn’t make your heart grow three sizes with excitement and doesn’t light a fire in your belly to shout it from a rooftop, maybe you need to reevaluate. Because baby you deserve to be happy. You deserve all of the goodness life has to offer. But it all starts with following your heart.
